Emma Cattell is an artist working with textiles, digital drawing and embroidery.

Her research tackles ideas around amateur / hobby practice and investigates hierarchies of representation via contemporary and historical theories of feminisms. Part of her research is the protest tradition of textile practices and the activation of their emancipatory potential.

She makes her work employing appliqué, free machine embroidery, digital embroidery, quilting and areas of hand and bead embroidery, often combining multi elements together.

She originally trained as a theatre and costume designer (Wimbledon School of Art, UK) and has designed set and costumes for various opera and theatre companies in the UK and Germany. More recently she’s been working within the free-performance scene in Berlin, creating textile based theatrical architectures.
